The exhibition Yoshitaka Amano – Beyond Fantasy (Além da Fantasia) is entering its final days at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil Brasília (CCBB Brasília), featuring a special program that brings two iconic universes from the Japanese artist’s career into the exhibition space. On October 31 and November 1, visitors will be able to encounter characters from the *Final Fantasy* franchise within the exhibition galleries. Additionally, on the holiday of November 2, the CCBB cinema will host a free screening of *Angel’s Egg* (1985)—a classic of Japanese animation directed by Mamoru Oshii, with artistic conception by Amano.
On Saturday and Sunday, from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM, cosplayers Rach Asakawa and Rayara Eckhardt will appear as *Final Fantasy* characters Fang and Lightning. Throughout these two days, visitors can interact and take photos with the characters as they move through the exhibition. This initiative brings the public closer to one of Amano’s most well-known creations; his contribution to the franchise’s visual identity helped shape an aesthetic that has left a lasting mark on generations of gamers, extending well beyond the realm of video games.
The program continues on Monday, November 2—with CCBB Brasília remaining open for the holiday—featuring a 4:00 PM screening of *Angel’s Egg*. This free session offers a chance to experience one of the most unique works of Amano’s career on the big screen. Tickets can be reserved via the website www.bb.com.br/cultura or obtained at the cultural center’s box office. With its gothic and surreal atmosphere, *Angel’s Egg* follows a solitary girl as she wanders through a desolate city, protecting a large egg. The narrative, built upon symbolic imagery and minimal dialogue, invites the viewer into a contemplative and enigmatic visual experience. Released in 1985, the feature film became a cult classic of Japanese animation, showcasing the power of Amano’s artistic language in the creation of characters, settings, and fantastical atmospheres.
Last chance to visit the exhibition In addition to special activities, the public has until November 1st to experience *Yoshitaka Amano – Beyond Fantasy*, which brings together 218 original works—shipped directly from Japan—alongside an immersive installation created specifically for this exhibition. Curated by Antonio Curti and sponsored by BB Asset, the exhibition spans over five decades of artistic production, revealing the diverse range of styles explored by one of the most influential figures in contemporary visual culture. Featuring paintings, illustrations, objects, and works previously little-known to the Brazilian public, the exhibition highlights a body of work that traverses animation, comics, video games, literature, fashion, and the visual arts. With their delicate line work, ethereal figures, and references that bridge Japanese tradition and Western art, these compositions reveal an artistic identity that remains instantly recognizable across various mediums and forms.
The exhibition’s arrival in Brasília continues Amano’s engagement with the Brazilian public—a journey that began with an exhibition in São Paulo in 2024 and expanded through subsequent runs at the CCBB (Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil) in the cities of Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro.
Reflecting on the opportunity to present his original works in the country, the artist notes: “Visitors will have the chance to see pieces that have never been exhibited before, including large-scale works on aluminum—something that can only be fully appreciated when viewing the original piece in person.” From animation to the visual arts Born in 1952 in Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture, Yoshitaka Amano began his career as a teenager at Tatsunoko Production, one of the most significant studios in the history of Japanese animation. Over the course of more than five decades, he developed a unique artistic language, characterized by fluid lines, elegant figures, and a blend of cultural references from diverse origins. His contribution to *Final Fantasy* was pivotal in shaping the franchise’s visual identity, while works such as *Vampire Hunter D* and *Angel’s Egg* cemented his standing within the fantasy genre. Collaborations with international authors, publishers, and brands have further expanded the reach of his creative output. Organized into seven thematic sections—*Tatsunoko*, *Final Fantasy*, *Candy Girl*, *Devaloka*, *Vampire Hunter D*, *Angel’s Egg*, and *Collaborations*—the exhibition offers a journey through various stages of his career. The experience concludes in the Glass Pavilion with an immersive installation developed in partnership with AYA Studio. Inspired by the *Devaloka* series, the installation employs 15 synchronized laser projectors, animations, and sound design to envelop visitors in worlds inhabited by deities, fantastical creatures, and landscapes that drift between the material and the spiritual realms.
