Vik Muniz is distinguished as one of the most innovative and creative artists of our time. The largest and most comprehensive retrospective ever dedicated to the work of visual artist Vik Muniz has arrived at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB) in Brasília. The exhibition brings together approximately 188 pieces—including photographs, sculptures, and objects—offering a journey through nearly four decades of creative output by one of Brazil’s most internationally recognized artists.
Curated by Mr. Daniel Rangel, “Vik Muniz – A Olho Nu” (“Vik Muniz – To the Naked Eye”) invites the public to explore, in depth, the creative processes, experiments, and transformations that have defined the artist’s career. Muniz is renowned for his ability to construct images using everyday materials—such as sugar, beans, chocolate, scrap metal, toys, magazine clippings, and various types of waste. By rearranging these elements, he creates portraits, landscapes, and references to art history that challenge the viewer’s perception.

About the Artist
Born in São Paulo in 1961, Vik Muniz has built an international career. With studios in Rio de Janeiro, New York, and Salvador, he has become a global reference, creating works that challenge the observer’s perception through the use of unconventional materials and innovative techniques. His work is held in major international collections, including those of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the Tate in London. In Brazil, his pieces are featured in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM-SP) and the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP). Furthermore, the artist is regularly invited to serve as a speaker, visiting professor, and artist-in-residence at prestigious educational institutions, including Harvard University, MIT, Princeton University, Yale, the Sorbonne, Oxford, Bard College, the TED Conference, and the World Economic Forum. Beyond his artistic practice, Mr. Muniz develops projects focused on education and social transformation, and has been appointed a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. The documentary *Waste Land* (*Lixo Extraordinário*), based on his work with waste pickers at the Jardim Gramacho landfill, was nominated for an Oscar and brought his work to new audiences around the world.
The exhibition presents everything from the three-dimensional pieces created before his systematic use of photography to his acclaimed series, following a path that combines chronological threads with thematic connections between the artist’s works. As Daniel Rangel explains, “The works relate to one another through poetic, visual, formal, or contextual similarities.”
