Ambassador of Serbia, Mr. Aleksandar Ristić

On Tuesday, February 25, the Embassy of Serbia in Brasília hosted an event to celebrate the National Day of the Republic of Serbia. The event, attended by members of the Brazilian government, ambassadors, journalists, and prominent figures from Brasília’s high society, was marked by moments of socialization, speeches, and the celebration of the strong relationship between the two countries.

The Ambassador of Serbia warmly welcomed the guests and, after a moment of interaction, began the ceremony in the main hall. The celebration commenced with the playing of the national anthems of Brazil and Serbia.

Foreign ambassadors were at the celebration.

In a gesture that emphasized the cultural closeness between the nations, the ambassador chose to deliver his speech in Portuguese. He highlighted the sociocultural similarities between Serbia and Brazil, such as their shared passion for football and their histories of resistance and popular struggles, citing examples like the Canudos War in Brazil and historical conflicts in Serbia.

Next, Mr. Flávio Goldman, Brazilian Government representative  and Director of the European Department at the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also delivered a speech, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic and cultural relations between the two countries. Goldman stressed the need to further strengthen ties of cooperation and friendship. A standout moment of the ceremony was the presence of former football player Dejan Petković, currently the honorary consul of the Embassy of Serbia in Rio de Janeiro. The ambassador humorously referred to Petković as “the most Brazilian Serbian there is”, highlighting him as a symbol of unity between the two countries, particularly due to their shared passion for football.

At the end of the speeches, the ambassador spoke a few words in Serbian to thank all the guests for their attendance. A lunch was then served, providing a moment of relaxation and celebration.

The event reinforced the historical and cultural ties between Serbia and Brazil, making it clear that the friendship between the two nations continues to grow. The celebration concluded with the ambassador once again expressing gratitude for everyone’s presence and reaffirming the commitment to further strengthen the bonds between the two countries.
