The international exhibition “Joaquín Torres García – 150 anos”, for the first time in the country, brings together approximately 500 items, including works and documents such as paintings, unpublished manuscripts, maquettes, drawings, and the famous wooden toys produced by the Uruguayan artist’s family.
The exhibition celebrates the trajectory of one of the pillars of modern art in Latin America. Curated by Saulo di Tarso in collaboration with the Museo Torres García, the exhibition deepens the understanding of “constructive universalism” and presents Torres García as a thinker of global reach. It also highlights the pedagogy of the Taller Torres García, which advocated that Latin American artists develop their own art. The proposal was to encourage each artist to seek their roots, symbols, and local references, creating a more authentic production connected to the culture of the continent — something that directly dialogues with the selection present in the exhibition.
As part of the opening, the performance Frictions, by Juliana Notari, was presented, combining puppetry, dance, and music in a dialogue with the artist’s work. The event was open to all ages.
With an international career in South America and Europe, the puppeteer has developed a rare body of work in Brazil and, based on her research on Torres García, highlighted the African dimension present in his production. The performance also featured Ivo Grieco (dance) and Heri Brandino (marimba and wooden instruments), and was inspired by Universal Constructivism, highlighting symbols such as fish, heart, sun, and moon.
According to the curator, the work broadened the interpretation of the exhibition by bringing the artist’s thinking closer to contemporary practices.

A exposição internacional Joaquín Torres García – 150 anos, inédita no país, reúne aproximadamente 500 itens entres obras e documentos, incluindo pinturas, manuscritos inéditos, maquetes, desenhos e os célebres brinquedos de madeira produzidos pela família do artista uruguaio. A mostra celebra a trajetória de um dos pilares da arte moderna na América Latina.
Com curadoria de Saulo di Tarso em colaboração com o Museo Torres García, a exposição aprofunda o entendimento sobre o “universalismo construtivo” e apresenta Torres García como um pensador de alcance global. Destaca também a pedagogia do Taller Torres García, que defendia que os artistas da América Latina desenvolvessem uma arte própria. A proposta era incentivar cada artista a buscar suas raízes, símbolos e referências locais, criando uma produção mais autêntica e conectada com a cultura do continente — algo que dialoga diretamente com a seleção presente na exposição.
Como parte da abertura, foi apresentada a performance Fricções, de Juliana Notari, que combinou marionete, dança e música em um diálogo com a obra do artista. A classificação foi livre.
Com trajetória internacional na América do Sul e na Europa, a marionetista desenvolveu um trabalho raro no Brasil e, a partir de sua pesquisa sobre Torres García, evidenciou a dimensão africana presente em sua produção. Segundo o curador, a obra ampliou a leitura da exposição ao aproximar o pensamento do artista de práticas contemporâneas.
