CCBB brings the exhibition “Ancestral: Afro-Americas” to Brasília, featuring more than 130 works by Black artists from Brazil and the United States.

From March 3rd to May 3rd, at the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center – Brasília (CCBB Brasília), the public can visit, free of charge, the exhibition “Ancestral: Afro-Americas,” which celebrates the African roots that connect Brazil and the United States through art.

The exhibition brings together approximately 130 works by Black artists from both countries and proposes an immersion in the aesthetic, political, and symbolic force of Afro-diasporic ancestry in the Americas.

The CCBBs in the cities of Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, and Salvador have already hosted the exhibition, which arrives in the federal capital reaffirming the power of a transatlantic dialogue that spans centuries. Among the participating artists are Abdias Nascimento, Simone Leigh, Sonia Gomes, Leonard Drew, Mestre Didi, Melvin Edwards, Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker, Bispo do Rosário, Carrie Mae Weems, Mônica Ventura, and Julie Mehretu, prominent names in contemporary and modern art.

With artistic direction by Marcello Dantas and curated by Ana Beatriz Almeida and Renato Araújo da Silva, “Ancestral: Afro-Americas” is organized into three thematic sections — Body, Dream, and Space — that guide the public through reflections on identity, belonging, memory, and historical reconstruction.

In the “Body” section, the works explore the limits of representation and highlight the historical and symbolic challenges of portraying Black people in art, reaffirming the body as a territory of resistance and affirmation.

In “Dream”, marked by issues of identity and heritage, the works expand the limits of abstraction and invite contemplation, promoting a space for reflection on memory, spirituality, and continuity.

In “Space”, the works examine proposals for world-building and place-making, blending the natural and the urban while addressing themes such as immigration, history, and community, challenging conventional perceptions of territory and belonging.

CCBB traz para Brasília a exposição Ancestral: Afro-Américas, com mais de 130 obras de artistas negros do Brasil e dos Estados Unidos.

De 3 de março a 3 de maio, no Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil – Brasília (CCBB Brasília), o público poderá visitar, gratuitamente, a exposição “Ancestral: Afro-Américas”, que celebra as raízes africanas que conectam Brasil e Estados Unidos por meio da arte. A mostra reúne cerca de 130 obras de artistas negros dos dois países e propõe um mergulho na força estética, política e simbólica da ancestralidade afro-diaspórica nas Américas.

Os CCBBs nas cidades de Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro e Salvador já sediaram a exposição que chega à capital federal reafirmando a potência de um diálogo transatlântico que atravessa séculos. Entre os artistas participantes estão Abdias Nascimento, Simone Leigh, Sonia Gomes, Leonard Drew, Mestre Didi, Melvin Edwards, Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker, Bispo do Rosário, Carrie Mae Weems, Mônica Ventura e Julie Mehretu, nomes de destaque da arte contemporânea e moderna.

Com direção artística de Marcello Dantas, curadoria de Ana Beatriz Almeida e Renato Araújo da Silva, “Ancestral: Afro-Américas” está organizada em três núcleos temáticos — Corpo, Sonho e Espaço — que conduzem o público por reflexões sobre identidade, pertencimento, memória e reconstrução histórica.

No núcleo “Corpo”, as obras exploram os limites da representação e evidenciam os desafios históricos e simbólicos de retratar pessoas negras na arte, reafirmando o corpo como território de resistência e afirmação.

Em “Sonho”, marcado por questões de identidade e herança, os trabalhos expandem os limites da abstração e convidam à contemplação, promovendo um espaço de reflexão sobre memória, espiritualidade e continuidade.

Já em “Espaço”, as obras examinam propostas de construção de mundo e criação de lugares, mesclando o natural e o urbano ao tratar de temas como imigração, história e comunidade, desafiando percepções convencionais de território e pertencimento.
