The Google Arts & Culture platform launched, on November 11th, the collection Brasília: Um Sonho Construido (Brasilia: A dream constructed), an unprecedented online exhibition dedicated to the city. In partnership with 19 museums and local cultural institutions, the exhibition provides a dip in the modernist architecture and cultural scene of Brasília. The show features 100 virtual exhibits with 4,000 historical images, details of 200 artworks digitized in high resolution, 360° virtual tours of the city’s main museums, and educational resources for parents and teachers. With the launch, Brasília becomes the first city in Latin America to gain an exposure on Google Arts & Culture.
The collection, divided into history, architecture and culture, features a section dedicated exclusively to the work of architect Oscar Niemeyer, one of the main names in the city’s construction. Among Niemeyer’s works, it is possible to see a 3D and augmented reality version of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasília. In addition, the section follows the life and work of the architect year after year.
Another highlight in the exhibition are the historical records of the Public Archives of the Distrito Federal. In the documents, which present fundamental events for the construction of the city, there are stories of the trajectories of the workers who built the city. The accounts are told from letters sent to the workers’ families about the first days of Brasília’s existence.
There is also space for museums that aim to preserve the art and heritage of the city and Brazil, such as the “Museu Nacional da República” national museum and the Athos Bulcão Foundation. In this section, there are more than 200 works of art that were captured in ultra-resolution, allowing a detailed view of each painting.
Finally, the cerrado, one of the oldest and most diversified biomes on the planet, is part of the collection. The exhibition shows the history of the ecosystem that surrounds the city, as well as a bird watching tour and the diversity of frogs that inhabit the region.
Google Arts & Culture has been helping, since 2011, in the digital availability of collections and heritage from cultural institutions, with the aim of providing access to knowledge and art for people anywhere in the world. Os relatos são contados a partir de cartas enviadas às famílias dos trabalhadores sobre os primeiros dias de existência de Brasília.
Há também espaço para museus que visam preservar a arte e o patrimônio da cidade e do Brasil, como o Museu Nacional da República e a Fundação Athos Bulcão. Nesta seção, são mais de 200 obras de arte que foram capturadas em ultra-resolução, permitindo uma visão detalhada de cada pintura.
Por fim, o cerrado, um dos biomas mais antigos e diversificados do planeta, faz parte do acervo. A exposição mostra a história do ecossistema que cerca a cidade, além de um passeio de observação de pássaros e a diversidade de sapos que habitam a região.
