For an undetermined amount of time, the Vale do Maranhão cultural center will be holding a virtual exhibition with works of famous French-Brazilian photographer Pierre Verger, for free.

For the first time, unreleased photographs of the photographer, ethnologist, anthropologist and writer Pierre Verger are displayed to the public. The virtual exhibition Maranhão by Pierre Verger, available on the website of the “Vale do Maranhão” Cultural Center, gathers 80 images of the Frenchman, some never divulged, made during his passage through the Brazilian state of Maranhão in the late 1940s.

Curated by historian Paula Porta, in partnership with the Pierre Verger Foundation, the exhibition reveals the Frenchman’s vision in search of relations between African and Brazilian culture, especially in the north of the country. The public can see through Verger’s records a Maranhão from the middle of the 20th century, with religious traditions and economic activities, in daily resistance, expanding the understanding of religiosity, work, art, philosophy and many other aspects that form Brazilian culture.
