Cine Brasília hosts the 1ª Mostra de Cinema Latino Americano e Caribenho (Latin American and Caribbean Film Festival) from May 24 to June 6. The festival is promoted by the Latin Americans and Caribbean embassies in Brasília in an effort to present to the audience the growing and exciting new cinema of these countries.

The program includes movies from the Dominican Repubic, Colombia, Uruguay, Peru, Chile, Cuba and more. One of the highlights of the festival is “Barrow: Freedom Fighter”. Directed by Marcia Weekes and produced in Barbados, “Barrow: Freedom Fighter” is the first film to feature the life story of a prominent Caribbean politician/statesman and includes interviews with Barbadian historians, politicians, icons like cricketer Sir Garfield Sobers and of course family members. There are also reenactments of some of the major moments in his personal and professional life.

Zoraida, an elderly peasant from a destitute village in the Andean Mountains, confronts her worst fears in the wake of the unexpected return of her estranged son. Three unconnected regions, three introverted women, three stories of discovery shaped by three different geographies, societies and climates of the same fragmented country.

Three love stories in a wonderful place in the Caribbean. Gael Castillo is a famous Latin American writer married to a woman in California. During a trip he meets his best friend’s ex girlfriend. At the same time, Sofia and her father are trapped on the island, which helps Sofia embark on a new love.

In the year 1780, a group of slaves flees from a sugarcane plantation, looking for a quilombo. They are pursued by Don Manuel, an obsessed landowner.

8h30 pm – Viejo Calavera

Elder Mamaní (Julio Cezar Ticona) is a young man who has just become an orphan after losing his father. He moves to Huanuni, a mining town, where he will live with his grandmother and work in the mine of a powerful local man. Elder does not care about much, does not seem to care at all about the death of his father and the state that his life is. However, when a secret about the father’s death comes to light, Elder’s life changes completely.

ALBA, an 11 year old girl, has to move to her father’s house due to her mother’s illness. She barely knows him and sharing time with him at home feels weird. Both are shy, both feel lonely but they can’t find a way to approach each other.
