Lieutenant General Mrs. Carla Lyrio Martins, the first woman to achieve the rank of general officer in the Brazilian Air Force, visited Pakistan in February 2024 to share her journey and inspire women aspiring to join military missions. During her stay, she delivered a lecture at the National Defense University (NDU) in Islamabad and participated in a workshop where she interacted with Pakistani women from various fields.
At 59 years old and currently the commander of the Superior School of Defense in Brasília, Martins emphasized the importance of women’s presence in the armed forces. “We are present and necessary for the success of missions. The presence of women makes the force more resilient and modern,” she stated in an interview with Arab News.
The Brazilian officer, who joined the military service in March 1990 and was promoted to her current rank in November 2023, acknowledged the challenges she faced throughout her career. However, she highlighted that Brazil’s armed forces have evolved into an organization that offers equal opportunities. “Women in Brazil are very welcome. We have learned to walk together, side by side, with equal opportunities. If you have the will, if you study and are willing to accept new challenges, anything is possible,” she said.
Martins stressed that leadership is not defined by gender but by capability and vision. “I believe it is a matter of posture, the ability to interact and communicate directions. We, women, have all the possibilities, and the number of women in leadership positions is increasing,” she noted. She also emphasized that women in command roles can help steer the course of any institution, including the armed forces.
A mother of two, the Brazilian general highlighted the importance of balancing career and family life. “Education, dedication, and hard work are essential for success, but family life is also vital. Men need to share responsibilities at home,” she said. She encouraged young women to pursue their dreams: “Educate yourselves, be courageous, and try, because we can achieve whatever we want.”
Regarding her experience in Pakistan, Martins said the visit challenged her previous perception of the country, which had been shaped by international media coverage. “The perception we have in other countries about Pakistan is not what I saw here. I found a modern city, people open to dialogue and tolerant. The external view is of a very closed country, but that is not what I am seeing,” she reported.
She also praised the hospitality and cuisine of Islamabad, stating that she enjoyed everything she tried. “The city is beautiful, and the food is wonderful,” she concluded. Aprendemos a caminhar juntas, lado a lado, com oportunidades iguais. Se você tem vontade, se estuda e está disposta a aceitar novos desafios, tudo é possível”, disse.
Martins enfatizou que a liderança não é definida pelo gênero, mas pela capacidade e visão. “Acredito que é uma questão de postura, de capacidade de interagir e comunicar direções. Nós, mulheres, temos todas as possibilidades, e o número de mulheres em posições de liderança está aumentando”, observou. Ela também destacou que mulheres em cargos de comando podem ajudar a definir o rumo de qualquer instituição, incluindo as forças armadas.
Mãe de dois filhos, a general brasileira destacou a importância de equilibrar carreira e vida familiar. “Educação, dedicação e trabalho duro são fundamentais para o sucesso, mas a vida familiar também é vital. Os homens precisam compartilhar as responsabilidades em casa”, afirmou. Ela encorajou as jovens a seguirem seus sonhos: “Eduquem-se, sejam corajosas e tentem, porque podemos chegar onde quisermos”.
Sobre sua experiência no Paquistão, Martins disse que a visita desafiou sua visão prévia do país, que havia sido moldada pela cobertura da mídia internacional. “A percepção que temos em outros países sobre o Paquistão não é o que vi aqui. Encontrei uma cidade moderna, pessoas abertas ao diálogo e tolerantes. A visão externa é de um país muito fechado, mas não é o que estou vendo”, relatou.
Ela ainda elogiou a hospitalidade e a culinária de Islamabad, afirmando ter gostado de tudo o que experimentou. “A cidade é linda, e a comida é maravilhosa”, concluiu. A visita de Carla Lyrio Martins ao Paquistão em fevereiro de 2024 não só reforçou os laços entre os dois países, mas também serviu como um exemplo inspirador para as mulheres paquistanesas que buscam superar barreiras e alcançar posições de destaque em suas carreiras, inclusive nas forças armadas.
