Presented by the Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Brazil, the “Jean Mermoz em Natal” project celebrates 90 years of the first transatlantic air crossing with postal mail, a milestone in the world history of commercial aviation. The virtual exhibition, which can be seen both in Portuguese and in French, is already live in the Calamelo platform (Link at the end of the article).
In addition to rescuing the history of the “Compagnie Générale de l’Aéropostale”, an air postal transport company, in Brazil, the exhibition tells how the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean occurred in 1930. In the curatorship, Beatriz de Miranda and Mônica Cristina Corrêa were responsible for the images, illustrations and texts of the project, which allows to relive the trajectory of the aviator Jean Mermoz.
In May 1930, Mermoz was accompanied by radio operator Gimié and navigator Dabry during the flight from Saint-Louis, Senegal, to the city of Natal, Brazil. Charged with bringing 20,000 letters to Brazilian soil, the aviators made an unprecedented crossing that was responsible for shortening the distance between Europe and the then called New World, accelerating business and changing the history of postal correspondence.

Além de resgatar a história da “Compagnie Générale de l’Aéropostale”, empresa de transporte aéreo postal, no Brasil, a exposição conta como ocorreu a travessia do Oceano Atlântico em 1930. Na curadoria, Beatriz de Miranda e Mônica Cristina Corrêa foram responsáveis pelas imagens, ilustrações e textos do projeto, que permitem reviver a trajetória do aviador Jean Mermoz.
Em maio de 1930, Mermoz foi acompanhado pela operadora de rádio Gimié e pelo navegador Dabry durante o vôo de Saint-Louis, no Senegal, para a cidade de Natal, no Brasil. Encarregados de trazer 20 mil cartas para solo brasileiro, os aviadores fizeram uma travessia inédita que foi responsável por encurtar a distância entre a Europa e o então chamado Novo Mundo, acelerando os negócios e mudando a história da correspondência postal.
