From March 11th until May 25th, the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB) Brasília will host the exhibition “ROUČKA – Kafka em Movimento” (ROUČKA – Kafka in Movement), a visual immersion in the work of renowned Czech painter Pavel Roučka, inspired by the literary universe of Franz Kafka.
The show presents an expressive set of large-format paintings and lithographs, translating Kafka’s complexity and symbolism into colors and expressive forms. The exhibition invites the public to experience the intersection between literature and the visual arts, offering an expanded sensory experience with books and videos. It is free to visit, and the program includes lectures, workshops and film screenings, providing an insight into Roučka’s creative process and the influence of Kafka’s work on his career.
The exhibition also celebrates 105 years of diplomatic relations between the Czech Republic and Brazil, strengthening cultural exchange between the two countries. Supported by the Czech Embassy and sponsored by CBC, the exhibition reinforces the connection between art, literature and history, inviting the public to reflect on the dilemmas of human existence from a new visual perspective.
Comprising 44 works, including large-format paintings produced between 1989 and 2024 and lithographs produced between 1991 and 2012, the exhibition presents a significant cross-section of the Czech artist’s production. They are geometric distortions, figures that perform acrobatics between the human and the non-human, squalid and cornered types, who move in the face of improbable struggles and make internal agony a trace of their presence, of their passage. Roučka titled many of his works after situations that came directly from his reading and imagination of passages written by Kafka.
Sound, visual and tactile experiences invite the audience to an immersive experience in the work of the painter and writer. The sound design that permeates the gallery was produced from phrases taken from Kafka’s texts and spoken in Portuguese and Czech, creating an atmosphere that leads the visitor through Kafka’s literary universe. A replica of “The Castle” printed in German in 1926, banners in Portuguese and English with excerpts from the book and copies of the novel collected in bookstores present the public with the various editions published in Brazil over almost a hundred years since it was first presented. A video produced by director Pablo Munhoz from footage of Roučka taken by documentary filmmaker Vladimir Holomek in the artist’s studio, with music by Leoš Janáček and phrases by Franz Kafka. The exhibition has accessibility for blind and low-vision people by means of a tactile map and audio description of most of the works.
About Pavel Roučka: Pavel Roučka was born in Prague on June 20th, 1942 and studied at the Prague Secondary School of Geodesy and Cartography, where he graduated in 1960. Between 1968 and 1969, he was responsible for cartoon set design at the Belvision studio in Brussels. From 1974, he expanded his graphic experimentation beyond painting, creating figurative compositions and paraphrases of Renaissance images, using rotogravure and fused varnish techniques. In 1977, he started working with lithography, producing original prints with biblical themes, as well as Kafkaesque ones. From the 1980s onwards, he focused mainly on painting, drawing and lithography, and is known for his expressive figurative compositions, marked by the use of unusual colors and unconventional working methods. It was also from the 1980s onwards that Roučka began to produce large-format paintings, creating a dialogue between the various techniques and media to translate Kafka’s work.
The complementary program offers the public lectures, workshops, guided tours and a musical show: “The Metamorphosis of Metaphor”, a dialogue between Franz Kafka’s literature and Brazilian song. The exhibition also offers information about the artist and writer and special content here, such as a 3D tour of the exhibition.
On March 11th, at the CCBB Brasília Cinema, writer and researcher Nilson Luiz May will open the complementary program with a lecture entitled “Franz Kafka: Between the Real and the Fantastic”. The expert, who was recognized by the Czech Embassy in Brasilia in December 2024 for his work in promoting Franz Kafka and Czech culture, leads an immersion in the work and career of the Prague-born author, exploring themes, anxieties and paradoxes. Kafka, one of the greatest names in world literature, influenced generations of readers, writers and artists, awakening deep reflections. The meeting will also discuss Karel Čapek, another icon of Czech literature, recognized for his contributions to literary and scientific thought.

A partir do dia 11 de março até o dia 25 de maio, o Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB) Brasília receberá a exposição “ROUČKA – Kafka em Movimento”, uma imersão visual na obra do renomado pintor tcheco Pavel Roučka, inspirado pelo universo literário de Franz Kafka.
A mostra apresenta um conjunto expressivo de pinturas em grande formato e litografias, traduzindo em cores e formas expressivas a complexidade e os simbolismos kafkianos. A exposição convida o público a experimentar a interseção entre literatura e artes visuais, oferecendo uma experiência sensorial ampliada com livros e vídeos. A visitação é gratuita, e a programação inclui palestras, workshops e mostra de filmes, proporcionando um mergulho no processo criativo de Roučka e na influência da obra de Kafka em sua trajetória.
A exposição também celebra os 105 anos das relações diplomáticas entre a República Tcheca e o Brasil, fortalecendo o intercâmbio cultural entre os dois países. Com apoio da Embaixada da República Tcheca e patrocínio da CBC, a mostra reforça a conexão entre arte, literatura e história, convidando o público a refletir sobre os dilemas da existência humana sob uma nova perspectiva visual.
Composta por 44 obras, entre pinturas em grande formato produzidas entre 1989 e 2024 e litogravuras produzidas entre 1991 e 2012, a mostra apresenta um recorte significativo da produção do artista tcheco. São distorções geométricas, figuras que traçam acrobacias entre o humano e o não-humano, tipos esquálidos e acuados, que se movimentam diante de lutas improváveis e fazem da agonia interna um traço da sua presença, da sua passagem. Roučka intitulou muitos dos seus trabalhos a partir de situações vindas diretamente da sua leitura e imaginação de trechos escritos por Kafka.
Experiências sonoras, visuais e táteis convidam o público a uma experiência imersiva na obra do pintor e do escritor. O desenho de som que permeia a galeria foi produzido a partir de frases retiradas de textos de Kafka e faladas em português e em tcheco, criando uma atmosfera que conduz o visitante pelo universo literário de Kafka. Uma réplica de “O castelo” impresso em alemão em 1926, banners em português e inglês com trechos do livro e exemplares do romance e coletados em sebos de livros apresentam ao público as várias edições publicadas no Brasil ao longo de quase cem anos desde que foi apresentado pela primeira vez. Uma videoarte produzida pelo diretor Pablo Munhoz a partir de filmagens de Roučka realizadas pelo documentarista Vladimir Holomek no ateliê do artista, com música de Leoš Janáček e frases de Franz Kafka. A mostra conta com acessibilidade para pessoas cegas e com baixa visão por meio de mapa tátil e áudio descrição de grande parte das obras.
Sobre Pavel Roučka: Pavel Roučka nasceu em Praga em 20 de junho de 1942 e fez sua formação acadêmica na Escola Secundária de Geodésia e Cartografia de Praga, onde se formou em 1960. Entre 1968 e 1969, foi responsável pela cenografia de desenhos animados no estúdio Belvision, em Bruxelas. A partir de 1974, ampliou suas experimentações gráficas para além da pintura, criando composições figurativas e paráfrases de imagens do Renascimento, utilizando técnicas de rotogravura e verniz fundido. Em 1977, passou a trabalhar com litografia, produzindo gravuras originais com temas bíblicos, além dos kafkianos. A partir dos anos 1980, concentrou-se principalmente na pintura, no desenho e na litografia, sendo conhecido por suas composições figurativas expressivas, marcadas pelo uso de cores incomuns, e por métodos de trabalho não convencionais. É também a partir dos anos 1980 que Roučka começa a produzir as pinturas em grande formato criando um diálogo entre as várias técnicas e suportes para traduzir a obra de Kafka.
A programação complementar oferece ao público palestras, workshops, visitas guiadas e um show musical: “A Metamorfose da Metáfora”, um diálogo entre a literatura de Franz Kafka e a canção brasileira. A mostra disponibiliza ainda aqui informações sobre o artista, o escritor e conteúdos especiais, como uma visita 3D à exposição.
No dia 11 de março, no Cinema do CCBB Brasília, o escritor e pesquisador Nilson Luiz May abre a programação complementar com a palestra “Franz Kafka: Entre o Real e o Fantástico”. O especialista, reconhecido pela Embaixada da República Tcheca em Brasília, em dezembro de 2024, por seu trabalho na divulgação de Franz Kafka e da cultura tcheca, conduz uma imersão na obra e trajetória do autor nascido em Praga, explorando temas, angústias e paradoxos. Kafka, um dos maiores nomes da literatura mundial, influenciou gerações de leitores, escritores e artistas, despertando reflexões profundas. O encontro também abordará Karel Čapek, outro ícone da literatura tcheca, reconhecido por suas contribuições ao pensamento literário e científico.
