From December 17th to February 23rd, the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (Banco do Brasil Cultural Center) will present a new exhibition “Nise: A Revolução pelo Afeto (The Revolution through Affection)” in Galeria 1 (Gallery 1). The exhibition will feature around 90 works, highlighting the production of clients of the Museu de Imagens do Inconsciente* (Museum of Images of the Unconscious), such as Carlos Pertuis, Adelina Gomes, Emygdio de Barros and Fernando Diniz.
*Museu de Imagens do Inconsciente (Museum of Images of the Unconscious) is a living center for study and research on images and has a markedly interdisciplinary character, which allows constant exchange between clinical experience, theoretical knowledge of psychology and psychiatry, cultural anthropology, history, art and education.
These works share space with pieces by big names such as Lygia Clark and Zé Carlos Garcia, as well as photographs by Alice Brill, Rogério Reis and Rafael Bqueer, videos by Leon Hirzsman and Tiago Sant’Ana, and watercolors and photos by Carlos Vergara. Curated by Estúdio M’Baraká, the exhibition celebrates the avant-garde and creative dimension of one of the greatest Brazilian scientists, whose relevance transcends borders, bringing a correlation between art and science.
Nise da Silveira was born in 1905 in Maceió, State of Alagoas. Graduated from the Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia (University of Medicine of Bahia) in 1926, she was an important Brazilian psychiatrist, considered a pioneer in the defense of humanized treatments for patients with mental disorders. She dedicated herself to psychiatry, always taking a stand against violent methods that were the aggressive forms of treatment at the time, such as hospitalization, electroshock, insulin therapy and lobotomy and introduced treatments that put patients in contact with domestic animals and artistic expressions.
