Until February 14th, 2021, the National Museum, at the “Praça dos Três Poderes”, will be holding the art exhibit “A substância da Terra: o Sertão” (The Substance of the Earth: the Sertão), with many art pieces that showcase the identity of the Brazilian region of the Sertão. The sertão is a Brazilian region with a desert-like climate and vegetation, it is present in the northeast region of Brazil and in the state of Minas Gerais.
The museum’s mezzanine immerses the viewer in the Brazilian Sertão. Curated by Simon Watson, the show The Substance of the Earth: the sertão brings the work of four Brazilian artists who explore the spirit of the sertão: Bené Fonteles, João Trevisan, Leandro Júnior, and Lidia Lisbôa.
The design of the exhibition, the second in a series of curatorial projects on the sertão region that began in São Paulo, was born out of the curator’s fascination with the Jequitinhonha Valley, in Minas Gerais. Two years ago, Watson embarked on a 20-hour road trip to the region, which enchanted him with the landscapes and, mainly, for the people of the region.
The exhibit in Brasília intends to show a typical dwelling in the Brazilian Sertão. The exhibit is framed by two floating walls created by João Trevisan, made of wood. Inside, there are two paintings by the artist. Among the other artistic elements that mark the external walls of the exhibit, are two murals made with paint splashing covering the entire length of the floor to ceiling, installed by Leandro Júnior. Referring to a sacred space, the interior of the exhibit contains three “Towers” by Bené Fonteles; three sculptures in fabric by Lidia Lisbôa and, a low, elliptical and clay-covered platform exposing several sculptures by Cupinzeiros, also by Lidia Lisbôa.

O mezanino do museu mergulha o espectador no Sertão brasileiro. Com curadoria de Simon Watson, a mostra A Substância da Terra: o sertão traz a obra de quatro artistas brasileiros que exploram o espírito do sertão: Bené Fonteles, João Trevisan, Leandro Júnior e Lidia Lisbôa.
O desenho da mostra, a segunda de uma série de projetos curatoriais sobre o sertão que teve início em São Paulo, nasceu do fascínio do curador pelo Vale do Jequitinhonha, em Minas Gerais. Há dois anos, Watson embarcou em uma road trip de 20 horas pela região, que o encantou com as paisagens e, principalmente, para as pessoas da região.
A mostra de Brasília pretende mostrar uma casa típica do Sertão brasileiro. A mostra é enquadrada por duas paredes flutuantes da autoria de João Trevisan, em madeira. No interior, existem duas pinturas da artista. Entre os outros elementos artísticos que marcam as paredes externas da mostra, estão dois murais feitos com respingos de tinta cobrindo toda a extensão do chão ao teto, instalados por Leandro Júnior. Referindo-se a um espaço sagrado, o interior da mostra contém três “Torres” de Bené Fonteles; três esculturas em tecido de Lidia Lisbôa e, uma plataforma baixa, elíptica e revestida a argila, expondo várias esculturas de Cupinzeiros, também de Lidia Lisbôa.
