“About to host the G-20 summit, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia reports on many steps taken to accelerate growth and achieve the 2030 vision goals.
In view of the visible growth of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in recent years, the discussion of human rights in the Kingdom has gained prominence, due to the great effort made by the Saudi government in this area.
The first steps were; create the Human Rights Commission in the Kingdom in 2005, with the objective of protecting human rights and promoting them in accordance with international standards in all fields, and disseminating awareness of these rights, helping to ensure that they are applied in accordance with Islamic law.
The authority also has legal personality and total independence in the exercise of the functions for which it was created and stipulated in its regulations.
The commission has many functions, the most important of which are: ensuring that government agencies implement the applicable human rights laws and regulations, discovering violations in the regulations taking place in the Kingdom which constitute as a violation of human rights, taking the necessary legal measures in this regard, expressing opinions on draft regulations related to the topic, reviewing existing regulations and proposing amendments to them in accordance with legal procedures.
It is also working to accompany government agencies to implement the relevant International Human Rights Instruments to which the kingdom has adhered, to ensure that these authorities take the necessary steps to implement them.
The President of the Human Rights Commission, Dr. Awad Al-Awwad, said of the commission’s most recent work:
“The Kingdom has witnessed historic transformations and qualitative changes in the field of human rights, as more than 70 reform decisions have been made in the field of human rights under the directives of the Guardian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman, and under the direct leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz, describing these reforms as a success story led by the godfather of change, Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, emphasizing the work to highlight these reforms, and share them with the International Community as a pioneering and unique experience . “
This year, the Commission launched a qualitative initiative, which is the “Internal Communication Program of the Human Rights Commission”, in which a group of civil society institutions will be qualified to participate in meetings of the Human Rights Council, as well as in events of international human rights organizations, in addition to training young national leaders in the field and to reinforce the Kingdom’s presence and participation in human rights organizations around the world.
The Commission also started publishing information and data in English on the human rights situation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in its social media accounts, and launched a periodic newsletter, also in English, which addresses national reforms and advances in the field of human rights, and these steps aim to clarify the true picture of the human rights situation in the Kingdom, which in recent years has made great progress at the legislative, judicial and administrative levels.
On the other hand, the commission is committed to aligning local efforts to verify the proper functioning of human rights systems. Human Rights Commission spokesman in Saudi Arabia, Noura Al-Haqbani, revealed that the Commission made 2,094 visits to prisons and detention centers in all regions of the Kingdom during the period between 2019 and 2020 to ensure that detainees and convicts enjoy all the rights guaranteed to them by law, as these visits included 614 visits to public prisons, 557 visits to maximum security prisons, visits to various detention centers, 39 visits to childcare institutions and 49 visits to social monitoring houses.
The commission also provides a number of electronic services available to the general public through its website, whether to view the list of human rights in the Kingdom, the attached reports and statistics, or the legal research and books appointed by the commission, and many others efforts made to reach conscious people with guaranteed rights, who live safely in the heart of their homeland.”

Diante do visível crescimento do Reino da Arábia Saudita nos últimos anos, a discussão sobre os direitos humanos no Reino ganhou destaque, devido ao grande esforço realizado pelo governo saudita nesta área.
Os primeiros passos foram ; criar a Comissão de Direitos Humanos no Reino em 2005, com o objetivo de proteger Direitos humanos e sua promoção de acordo com as normas internacionais em todos os campos, e disseminar a conscientização sobre esses direitos, contribuindo para garantir que sejam aplicados de acordo com a lei islâmica.
A autoridade também goza de personalidade jurídica e total independência no exercício das funções para as quais foi criada e estipulada na sua regulamentação.
A comissão tem muitas funções, as mais importantes das quais são: garantir que as agências governamentais implementem as leis e regulamentos aplicáveis em relação aos direitos humanos, descobrir violações dos regulamentos em vigor no Reino, que constituem uma violação dos direitos humanos, tomar as medidas legais necessárias a esse respeito, expressar opiniões sobre projetos de regulamentos relacionados com o tema , revisar os regulamentos existentes e propor alterações aos mesmos de acordo com os procedimentos legais.

A Comissão também começou a publicar informações e dados em inglês sobre a situação dos direitos humanos no Reino da Arábia Saudita em suas contas de mídia social, e lançou um boletim informativo periódico, tanbém em inglês, que trata das reformas e avanços a nível nacional no campo dos direitos humanos, e essas etapas visam esclarecer o verdadeiro retrato da situação dos direitos humanos no Reino, que nos últimos anos teve um grande avanço nos níveis legislativo, judicial e administrativo.
Por outro lado, a comissão está empenhada no alinhamento dos esforços locais para verificar o bom funcionamento dos sistemas de direitos humanos.
