NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT NOMINATES AMB. BANKOLE A. ADEOYE FOR POST OF AU COMMISSIONER FOR POLITICAL AFFAIRS, PEACE AND SECURITY




The Nigerian Government has nominated Ambassador Bankole A. Adeoye as its candidate for the position of Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security for the term 2021-2025 at the elections schedule to hold in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in February, 2021. Amb. Bankole Adeoye is Nigeria’s former Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and United Nations Commission for Africa.


Ambassador Adeoye is a distinguished career diplomat with over 35 years’ experience in the field of foreign policy and diplomatic practice. He is a Pan-African Career Diplomat; Peace, Security and Sustainable Development Practitioner and Advocate for Africa’s Regional Integration and Partnership. He has served in various strategic national and continental capacities, including as Nigeria’s representative and representative of the AU-PSC.


He served thrice as Chairperson of the African Union Peace & Security Council in 2017, 2018 and 2019. His able leadership and guidance contributed to strengthening the partnership between AU-PSC and UN Security Council and EU Political and Human Security. He was instrumental to the operational take-off of the AU Humanitarian Agency and facilitated durable coalitions with AU Member States with the formation of Group of Friends on Children Affected by Armed


Conflict (CAAC) and AU/UN Partnerships. Amb. Adeoye led the PSC field missions to Lake Chad Basin (2017) and South Sudan (2018).


Bankole Adeoye also served in Brazil, from 2003-2007 as a Minister Counsellor in the Nigerian Embassy in Brasilia. While serving at the Mission in Brasilia, he coordinated Nigeria’s economic and cultural relations with Brazil and concurrently with Paraguay and Bolivia. He also actively engaged in the negotiations with the Brazilian Government on Nigeria’s debt restructuring and towards a closer cooperation between Brazil and Nigeria on alternative energy (ethanol).


Amb. Bankole Adeoye is conversant with the inner workings of regional and international systems, particularly the UN and AU. His working experience with the AU has garnered him proficiency in Continental and Multilateral Partnerships. He is highly committed to Pan-African values and the guiding principles of the Africa Union. He understands the nexus between peace, security and sustainable development, which will be needed to steer the formulation and implementation of Political Affairs, Peace and Security polices, programs and strategies in line with the aspirations of Agenda 2063 and other key continental legal and policy frameworks.


Ambassador Bankole Adeoye has served in various capacities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, including Nigerian Diplomatic Missions like Brasilia, Cairo and Addis Ababa.

O Governo Nigeriano nomeou o Embaixador Bankole A. Adeoye como seu candidato para o cargo de Comissário para Assuntos Políticos, Paz e Segurança para o mandato 2021-2025 no calendário eleitoral a realizar-se em Adis Abeba, Etiópia, em fevereiro de 2021. O Embaixador Bankole Adeoye foi o Embaixador da Nigéria na República Federal Democrática da Etiópia e o Representante Permanente da Nigéria na União Africana e na Comissão das Nações Unidas para a África.


O Embaixador Adeoye é um diplomata exemplar de carreira com mais de 35 anos de experiência no campo da política externa e prática diplomática. Ele é um diplomata de carreira pan-africano; praticante de paz, segurança e desenvolvimento sustentável e advogado para a integração e parceria regional da África. Ele serviu em várias capacidades estratégicas nos âmbitos nacionais e continentais, entre elas: representante da Nigéria e representante da UA-PSC.


Ele exerceu a função de Presidente do Conselho de Paz e Segurança da União Africana em três ocasiões: 2017, 2018 e 2019. A sua liderança e orientação habilidosas contribuíram para fortalecer a parceria entre a UA-PSC e o Conselho de Segurança da ONU e a Segurança Política e Humana da União Europeia. Ele teve uma participação fundamental para o início operacional da Agência Humanitária da União Africana e facilitou as coligações duradouras


com os Estados membros da União Africana com a formação do Grupo de Amigos para as Crianças Afetadas por Conflitos Armados (CAAC) e Parcerias UA / ONU. O Embaixador Adeoye liderou as missões de campo do PSC na Bacia do Lago Chade (2017) e no Sudão do Sul (2018).


Bankole Adeoye também atuou no Brasil, de 2003 a 2007, como ministro conselheiro na Embaixada da Nigéria em Brasília. Enquanto servia na Missão em Brasília, coordenou as relações econômicas e culturais da Nigéria com o Brasil e, simultaneamente, com o Paraguai e a Bolívia. Ele também se envolveu ativamente nas negociações com o governo brasileiro sobre a reestruturação da dívida da Nigéria e para uma cooperação mais estreita entre o Brasil e a Nigéria em energia alternativa (etanol).


O Embaixador Bankole Adeoye está familiarizado com o funcionamento interno dos sistemas regionais e internacionais, particularmente da ONU e da União Africana. Sua experiência de trabalho com a União Africana lhe rendeu proficiência em parcerias continentais e multilaterais. Ele está altamente comprometido com os valores pan-africanos e os princípios orientadoras da União Africana. Ele compreende o nexo entre paz, segurança e desenvolvimento sustentável, que será necessário para orientar a formulação e implementação de políticas, programas e estratégias de assuntos políticos, paz e segurança, em linha com as aspirações da Agenda 2063 e outros quadros jurídicos e políticos continentais essenciais.
