From December 20th to 22nd, the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center will present a new show, Vozes Ancestrais (Ancestral Voices). The show “Vozes Ancestrais (Ancestral Voices)” celebrates the encounter between the songs of the vissungo and the reigns of Minas Gerais, which mark the artistic and personal trajectory of the singer and multi-artist from Minas Gerais, Sérgio Pererê, with the spirituals, work songs and folk songs present in the history of enslaved black Americans, which are part of the heritage of Alissa Sanders, born in Los Angeles (USA) and living in Brazil for almost three decades. The songs echoed by the ancestors of Alissa and Pererê, whether in the gold cycle of Minas Gerais or in the American fields, carry an emotional weight in common for the two artists.
The roots of both Brazilian and American music lie in the songs of enslaved black people who sang songs as a way of preserving their cultures and as powerful mechanisms of survival and resistance. Inspired by this musical origin common to Brazil and the United States in the process of creating the African diaspora in America, artists Sérgio Pererê and Alissa Sanders conceived the show “Vozes Ancestrais (Ancestral Voices)”.

Show: Vozes Ancestrais no CCBB
