In order to celebrate Black Conscience Month, the Google Arts and Culture platform will be collaborating with several Brazilian cultural entities in order to bring African-Brazilian art through the virtual project “Consciências Negras” (Black Consciousness).
Google Arts & Culture launches the virtual project “Consciências Negras”, which brings together an unprecedented section on the platform dedicated to art, Afro-Brazilian culture and black ancestry, in order to promote a dive into the theme in partnership with 15 cultural institutions. The initiative features 31 exhibitions, 13 of which were previously unpublished, and brings Heloisa Hariadne, Pegge, Robinho Santana and Jess Vieira to portray stories of black protagonism.
The program includes a collection of 600 digitalized works from the Bahia Museum of Art, portrayed for the first time in high-resolution, and the show with details of the history behind this celebration, explained by the “Geledés Instituto da Mulher Negra” (Geledés Institute).
In addition to highlighting the stories of the National Museum of Fine Arts with the exhibition “Nas brechas das representações” (In the loopholes of representations), photographs of Brazilian customs by Christiano Junior; belonging to the National Historical Museum, the correspondences and statements that attest painter Cândido Portinari’s dedication to privileging marginalized voices and Afro-Brazilian figures, highlighted by the Cândido Portinari Foundation.
There are also works by the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Museu da Pessoa, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB) in Belo Horizonte, Instituto Moreira Salles, Museu Nacional, Museu de Arte Moderna Rio, Museu Oscar Niemeyer, among other institutions.
