An event to be remembered. This was the celebration of the National Day of the Republic of Barbados held on November 28, 2023 at Sof.Town, a new co-working space in the city. The celebration marked the 57th year of Barbados’ Independence and the 52nd year of the establishment of diplomatic relations. The event was considered as a mark in Barbados-Brazil relations, characterized especially by the mutual respect and growing alliance between Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and President Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva.

 The guests were received by the friendly ambassador Tonika Seale Thompson and other members of the Barbados embassy in Brasilia. After greetings, guests had access to an environment that presented the fraternal atmosphere and beauty of the country, including a decoration with beach sand, a drinks stand and beautiful images of the beaches of Barbados. As could not be missed, the famous Barbados rums were tasted by the guests. Barbados is known for producing some of the best rums in the world. Both Barbadian and Brazilian food were also served. The event featured musical performances highlighting Barbadian jazz in collaboration with Brazil musical genres.

 

A decoration with beach sand, drinks as the famous Barbadian rum and beautiful images of the beaches of Barbados were enjoyed by the guests.


Brazilian government authorities, foreign ambassadors, diplomats, businesspeople, academics and personalities from Brasilia society attended the beautiful event. Descendants and Barbadians living in Brazil were also at the celebration and received a special greeting from the ambassador. The Guest of Honor this year was the renowned Brazilian Minister of Culture, Ms. Margareth Menezes, who attended to offer congratulations on behalf of the President of Brazil, Mr. Luís Inácio Lula da Silva.

The ambassador gave a welcome speech to everyone and especially to the Barbadians and descendants of Barbadians present at the event. She announced the anthems of Brazil and Barbados, which were played by the musicians of the musical ensemble. After the hymns, the ambassador announced the playing of a video message from Prime Minister Mottley highlighting the growing relations with Brazil. The speech was applauded by everyone and then Ambassador Tonika Thompson spoke about Barbados’ presence in important discussions on the international scene and the priority that her country has been placing on regional approaches to climate security, food security, and sustainable energy solutions.

Guests received a video message from Prime Minister Mea Mottley.

After the message from the Prime Minister Mottley and Ambassador Thompson’s speech, the Head of the Department of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, Ms. Gisela Padovan, delivered remarks congratulating the importance of friendship and relations with Barbados, a country very dear to Brazil. The speeches were greatly applauded by everyone.

The Embassy in Barbados has been building relations on the ground in Brazil for this strategic cooperation since the opportunities for policy alignment emerged with the election President Lula in 2022, and the Mission has been preparing the groundwork for this cooperation by raising Barbados profile in Brazil over the last four years with events and speeches across the country.

The atmosphere of joy and fraternization was constant among the guests, who danced to lively musical rhythms. The ambassador of Barbados, Ms. Tonika Seale Thompson, was greatly congratulated for the success of the unforgettable event.
