Brazilian cinemas begin showing the film “Wicked – Part Two” this Thursday, November 20th. It is the final chapter in the story of the witches of Oz, and the musical promises to entertain audiences, especially fans of the famous 1939 musical fantasy film, which was based on the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.

Led by Oscar-nominated superstars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the final chapter of the untold story of the witches of Oz begins with Elphaba and Glinda separated, living with the consequences of their choices. Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), now demonized as the Wicked Witch of the West, lives in exile, hidden in the forest of Oz, while continuing her fight for the freedom of the silenced Animals and desperately trying to expose the truth she knows about The Wizard (Jeff Goldblum).

Meanwhile, Glinda has become the glamorous symbol of Goodness for the entire kingdom of Oz – she lives in the Emerald City palace and enjoys the perks of fame and popularity. Under the guidance of Madame Morrible (Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh), Glinda has become a bubbling comfort to the people of Oz, reassuring the masses that all is well under the Wizard’s rule.

The more Glinda’s fame grows, and the more preparations intensify for her wedding to Prince Fiyero (Olivier Award winner and Emmy and SAG Award nominee Jonathan Bailey) at a spectacular Ozian celebration, the more haunted she becomes by her separation from Elphaba. Her dedicated, likely unsuccessful, attempt to broker a reconciliation between Elphaba and the Wizard may even push them further apart. The consequences of this will transform Boq (Tony Award-nominated Ethan Slater) and Fiyero forever, and threaten the safety of Elphaba’s sister, Nessarose (Marissa Bode), when a girl from Kansas invades all their lives. Dorothy’s appearance in the film will pique the curiosity of those unfamiliar with the story of The Wizard of Oz. THE GUIDE recommends that anyone who can, to watch that famous 1939 film before watching Wicked Par Two. This will make it easier to understand the scenes that blend the stories of the two films.

As an angry mob rises against the Wicked Witch, Glinda and Elphaba will need to unite one last time. Their unique friendship now takes on a decisive position in their future, as they will need to look at and truly recognize each other, with honesty and empathy, if they want to change themselves—and the entire kingdom of Oz—forever.

The film also stars Emmy nominees Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James as Glinda’s devoted assistants, Pfannee and ShenShen, as well as BAFTA and Grammy nominee Sharon D. Clarke (Caroline, or Change) as the voice of Dulcibear, Elphaba’s nanny as a child. The film was once again produced by acclaimed and award-winning Tony and Emmy-winning producer Marc Platt and multi-Tony winner David Sonte.

Executive producers are Stephen Schwartz, David Nicksay, Jared LeBoff, Winnie Holzman, and Dana Fox. The first film, Wicked, released in November 2024, received 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and won in the categories of Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. To date, the film has grossed $750 million at the worldwide box office. “Wicked: Part Two” is based on the musical that marked an entire generation, with music and lyrics by the legendary Grammy and Oscar-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, and a book by Winnie Holzman, inspired by Gregory Maguire’s best-selling novel. The screenplay is by Winnie Holzman and Winnie Holzman & Dana Fox. The score was composed by John Powell & Stephen Schwartz, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.
