Directed by Bong Joon-ho and starring Robert Pattinson, the plot follows young Mickey Barnes who, to escape from loan shark pursuers, accepts an unprecedented mission outside of Earth. On the journey, after completing missions, he ends up being a “discarded” employee, but whose memories are restored in a new being after death. However, after numerous regenerations, Mickey 17, his current version, survives a dangerous mission and faces an existential dilemma when he encounters his next version, Mickey 18, which is ready to replace him.
It’s important to highlight the film’s critical tone, as expected from Bong Joon-Ho. The film is not subtle in satirizing charismatic leaders who defy institutions and how their followers blindly adore them. Additionally, it raises interesting questions about the definition of human life, cloning, and even parallels with an intergalactic UN court.
A clear highlight of the film is Robert Pattinson’s performance, as he plays different versions of himself. We see a great versatility from the actor, who surprises viewers multiple times with his wide range of acting skills.
The film is a great choice for those interested in science fiction themes and (not so) dystopian futures.
