Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
CCBB Brasília presents the play Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley. The production by Grupo Liquidificador, which celebrates the 15th anniversary of the Brasília-based collective, brings the 1818 novel into our present day, exploring Artificial Intelligence, technology, and debates about what makes us human.

Based on the iconic work Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus, by Mary Shelley, the staging moves away from the versions long celebrated in cinema and moves closer to the author’s original spirit. More than “retelling” the story, the play proposes a dialogue between Shelley and the present, and between the author herself and her Creature. On stage, Mary Shelley presents the themes of the classic to the audience and is confronted by her monster, who reveals the beating heart of this timeless work.
Fernando de Carvalho’s dramaturgy stems from two myths: the creature made of body fragments and the young author who, at 18, created a new literary genre. On stage, Ana Quintas and Larissa Souza blur the boundaries between creator and creature, showing Mary Shelley as author, character, and part of the myth she invented.
For director Fernanda Alpino, the show also reflects on our technological present, questioning the dangers of transferring decisions, thoughts, and relationships to machines and artificial intelligence. At the same time, it plays with the presence of Frankenstein in pop culture, showing that, although the creature is well-known, few know the author—a visionary and extremely relevant woman. Synopsis
Mary Shelley travels through time with the urgent mission of combating a sect, Prometheanism – A Marketing Ploy. Artificial Intelligence. To do this, she will present her Frankenstein project to the public and give life to her most famous creature. The encounter with the Creature reveals dilemmas carried through time and adaptations, and the creator must assume her responsibility and thus reflect on her own nature. Confronted with the notion of Artificial Intelligence, the Creature defends itself. It, indeed, has flesh, bone, memory, feels loneliness and love. It is artificial, intelligent, and alive.

Baseada na obra icônica Frankenstein ou o Prometeu Moderno, de Mary Shelley, a encenação se afasta das versões consagradas pelo cinema e se aproxima do espírito original da autora. Mais do que “recontar” a história, o espetáculo propõe um diálogo entre Shelley e o presente, e entre a própria autora e sua Criatura. Em cena, Mary Shelley apresenta ao público os temas do clássico e é confrontada por seu monstro, que revela o coração pulsante desta obra atemporal.
A montagem aposta em cenas não realistas, combinando trilha sonora, cenário e iluminação para transformar o palco em um laboratório ficcional. O resultado mistura aventura, comédia, drama, horror e ficção científica, oferecendo uma experiência que brinca com as convenções do teatro contemporâneo e envolve o público de forma surpreendente.
A dramaturgia de Fernando de Carvalho parte de dois mitos: a criatura feita de fragmentos de corpos e a jovem autora que, aos 18 anos, criou um novo gênero literário. Em cena, Ana Quintas e Larissa Souza borram as fronteiras entre criadora e criatura, mostrando Mary Shelley como autora, personagem e parte do mito que inventou.
Para a diretora Fernanda Alpino, o espetáculo também reflete sobre nosso presente tecnológico, questionando os perigos de transferir decisões, pensamentos e relações para máquinas e inteligências artificiais. Ao mesmo tempo, brinca com a presença de Frankenstein na cultura pop, mostrando que, embora a criatura seja conhecida, poucos conhecem a autora — uma mulher visionária e extremamente atual.
Sinopse
Mary Shelley viaja no tempo com a missão urgente de combater uma seita, O Prometheísmo – A Tal Jogada de Marketing. A Inteligência Artificial. Para isso ela vai apresentar ao público seu projeto Frankenstein e dar vida a sua criatura mais famosa. O encontro com a Criatura revela dilemas carregados através dos tempos e das adaptações, e a criadora precisa assumir sua responsabilidade e assim refletir a sua própria natureza. Confrontada com a noção de Inteligência Artificial, a Criatura se defende. Ela, sim, tem carne, osso, memória, sente solidão e amor. Ela é artificial, inteligente e viva.
