On a memorable night at Cine Brasília, the Embassy of Algeria promoted a diplomatic event of significant cultural and historical importance. The public in Brasília could watch the iconic film “The Battle of Algiers”, directed by Gillo Pontecorvo. The film was masterfully made and portrays the historical events of Algeria’s war of independence against French colonial rule in the middle of the last century.

 

Diplomats, Brazilian authorities and members of Brasilia’s society were at the event.

Before the screening, Algeria’s new ambassador, H.E. Mr. Abdelaziz Benali Cherif, addressed the audience, emphasizing the historical and cultural relevance of the film, which continues to resonate with issues of national liberation and social justice around the world. He highlighted the importance of cinema as an art form that not only entertains but also educates and promotes mutual understanding between nations.

 


“The Battle of Algiers” chronicles the urban resistance led by the FLN (National Liberation Front) against French colonial forces in Algiers, exploring the moral complexities and harsh realities faced by both sides of the conflict. The film is acclaimed for its realistic approach and its ability to capture the political and social tensions of the time.

 

During the event, diplomatic and personalities of Brazilian society gathered in a spirit of solidarity and dialogue to reflect on the historical lessons presented by the film and their contemporary relevance. The evening not only celebrated Algeria’s rich cultural heritage, but also strengthened the bonds of friendship and cooperation between participants, reaffirming the common commitment to justice and global peace.
