An Indigenous Perspective on the Work of Rugendas
Caixa Cultural (in Asa Sul) is presenting the exhibition “Todos Falam de Mim, Ninguém Me Representa” (Everyone Talks About Me, No One Represents Me).
Curated by Ziel Karapotó and Nara Galvão, the exhibition presents an Indigenous perspective on the work of Rugendas. This aims to reflect on the perspective we have always been taught about Brazilian history. The exhibition is presented by the Ricardo Brennand Institute.
The exhibition presents an unprecedented dialogue between the German artist Johann Moritz Rugendas and the contemporary work of the Indigenous visual artist Ziel Karapotó. It challenges the historically imposed narrative about Indigenous peoples. While the European painter portrayed Indigenous people and enslaved people from a Eurocentric perspective, Karapotó offers a critical, poetic, and decolonial reinterpretation of these representations.
The exhibition helps to value the ethnic and cultural diversity of Brazil, proposing new landscapes, dialogues, and reflections on the ways in which Indigenous peoples have been represented throughout the history of art and the formation of the national image.
Originally from the Brazilian state of Alagoas but now living in the state of Pernambuco – PE, Mr. Ziel Karapotó comes from the Karapotó Terra Nova community and currently resides in the Marataro Kaeté Indigenous Reserve, belonging to the multi-ethnic Karaxuwanassu people, in Igarassu (PE). He is establishing himself as one of the central figures in contemporary indigenous art in Brazil.

Um olhar indígena sobre a obra de Rugendas
Com curadoria de Ziel Karapotó e Nara Galvão, a exposição apresenta um olhar indígena sobre a obra de Rugendas. Isso com o objetivo de refletir sobre a perspectiva que nos sempre foi ensinada sobre a história brasileira. Realização do Instituto Ricardo Brennand.
A mostra apresenta um diálogo inédito entre o artista alemão Johann Moritz Rugendas e a produção contemporânea do artista visual indígena Ziel Karapotó. Troca a narrativa imposta historicamente sobre os povos originários.
Enquanto o pintor europeu retratava indígenas e pessoas escravizadas sob uma ótica eurocêntrica, Karapotó oferece uma releitura crítica, poética e decolonial dessas representações.
A exposição ajuda a valorizar a diversidade étnica e cultural do Brasil, propondo novas paisagens, diálogos e reflexões sobre as formas como os povos indígenas foram representados ao longo da história da arte e da formação da imagem nacional.
Alagoano radicado em Pernambuco, Ziel Karapotó é oriundo da comunidade Karapotó Terra Nova e vive atualmente na Reserva Indígena Marataro Kaeté, do povo multiétnico Karaxuwanassu, em Igarassu (PE). Ele vem se consolidando como um dos nomes centrais da arte contemporânea indígena no Brasil.
