From March 28th to April 13rd, the play “Solo da Cana” (Solo in Sugarcane), produced by Ana Paula Abreu and Renata Blasi, will run at CCBB Brasília’s Gallery 4.
Starring Izabel de Barros Stewart and directed by João Saldanha, the play seeks to answer the question: What would a sugar cane tell us after centuries of exploitation? by fictionalizing a plant testimony: the perspective of a sugar cane on colonial ties.
These ties set in motion a certain way of inhabiting the Earth and relating to the soil and its people, revealing the environmental racism that permeates these practices. In the play, dancer and performer Izabel de Barros Stewart, who has a remarkable career, launches herself as an actress and playwright. The play features a woman’s body taking the place of a sugar cane, an icon of mono-agro-pop culture, in a dialog with the audience, talking about the cultivation of affection between beings.
In a kind of counter-colonial manifesto, “Solo da Cana” (Solo in Sugarcane) deals with a battle between the expansion of the agricultural frontier and the atrophy of the sensitive horizon, between surplus and hunger, in the struggle for a land that recovers the cosmos. Beyond the frameworks that classify humans and non-humans, the challenge here is to understand the interactions that transform us materially and symbolically in the inevitable interspecies coexistence.
Izabel de Barros Stewart is a stage artist, performer and educator. She began her career in dance in the 1990s, working with João Saldanha, Dudude Herrmann, among others. She has a degree in History from PUC-Rio and a Master’s in Dance (DEA) from the University of Paris 8. She was a lecturer in the Department of Performing Arts at UFOP for 3 years. She has created works in partnership with various dance, theater, performance, music and visual arts artists, as well as working on environmental education and artivism projects, especially when she was coordinator of the NGO Primatas da Montanha (PRIMO), and also on the Ecology Board of the Ouro Verde Educational and Cultural Institute (INOV).
